I feel loved here.
I learn things that are valuable.
5280 High School is the largest recovery high school in the entire country.
We serve students who struggle with self-harm, substance use disorder and eating disorders and any other kind of destructive behaviors.
Our school is more based off of learning communication skills and group projects and problem-solving skills.
If you have a kid who's at school and theyre three days clean off of meth, its very hard to ask the kid to memorize a bunch of things and take a test at the end of class.
So project-based learning is a creative pedagogy for our kids to be able to learn in a different way that they can find value in, and really even have a say in what they're learning and what that looks like.
Project-based learning is the pedagogy that we use here where students learn not through textbooks, but through experience, by being of service to the world.
A lot of our students have not had super positive experiences in the classroom.
And traditional schooling is very cut and dry.
It's made for a specific type of mind.
Through project-based learning, we allow our students to explore their different areas of interest, to figure out what they're passionate about, to lean into their strengths, to work with other people.
The opposite of addiction is connection.
And so in project-based learning, there's a lot of group work, learning how to advocate for yourself, navigating conflict.
It would matter for these ones.
This ones a little bit off.
Those things really align with some of the things they got to do in their recovery program.
How do I problem solve and navigate who are my healthy peers that I hang around with?
How do I navigate different trials and tribulations at home?
The way I communicate with people and the way I communicate my feelings, and then obviously being sober, just getting time sober, and just being able to be around people more often and not so anxious all the time, I think has been a big growth.
Through project-based learning, I think that we've helped a lot of kids see that their strength and genius is so much more than their ability to sit at a desk and listen quietly to a teacher.
This school has mainly helped me realize that I'm not dumb.
I just cannot learn the same way that other people do.
But I'm fully capable of doing great things in my life.
I get a lot more support here academically and emotionally.
Theyre very open and honest with us.
They really just meet us at our level and don't talk down to us.
We love each other here so much.
It's a type of caring for people that you don't see in the real world outside of the school.
We hold each other accountable.
We're there for each other when we need it.
If we need a second with a friend outside of class, or to talk to a teacher or a recovery coach here, we have that at the tip of our fingers.
And it's amazing.
Project-based learning just feels like the best way to help our students sustain their recovery and meet the goals of the classroom.
I'm really proud of myself for getting two years sober.
I have made a lot of self-improvement.
I love myself.
I can be alone in a room with myself and not feel the need to cry or have somebody with me.
I get to see kids who were truly hopeless.
Broken.
Beaten.
Battered.
And to see them happy, joyous and free.
You can't put it into words what it means.
To see these kids recreate their lives, you wouldn't believe it unless you see it.
When life gives you a house, move it.
