Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwe begin with a dire warning from the U.S treasury secretary Janet Yellen telling Congress this week the U.S could run out of cash to pay its bills by June 1st that's if Congress doesn't raise or suspend the debt limit and divert what could become a global financial crisis that's a prediction the nonpartisan Congressional budget office confirmed now in Washington terms one month isn't a whole lot of time to get a resolution on the 31 trillion dollar debt limit the warning putting even more pressure on the high-stakes standoff between President Biden and Congressional leaders over government spending the president and house Speaker Kevin McCarthy will meet next week to continue negotiating meanwhile house Democrats this afternoon began a process that could allow them to bypass house Republican leadership and force a vote to raise the debt ceiling the GOP LED house narrowly passed a debt ceiling Bill last week to temporarily raise the limit by more than a trillion dollars tied to though discretionary spending cuts New Jersey's Democratic Congressional members have been railing against that legislation saying the consequences would be damaging for families and businesses across the state so all we're saying really as Democrats this is what President Biden is saying is we should just do what we've done every year for the 35 years I've been in Congress which is just extended at stealing a lift the debt ceiling pay our debts and we don't need to create this artificial uh you know situation for no reason because it's not a problem right now and we don't want to put the economy in trouble and we certainly don't want to hurt all the people that are on Medicaid who would suffer from being kicked off [Music]
