Every other Tuesday, kids and staff are encouraged to wear their traditional clothing, whether that be their regalia or a ribbon skirt, their belts, their moccasins.
We have a sister school in Ignacio.
They have Fancy Friday, so they dress up on Friday.
So the idea kind of came from that.
We started that this year.
To me, seeing the kids wearing their traditional clothes, it's heartwarming.
They come up and they're like, Miss Mikayla, look what I'm wearing today, or look what I have.
I think before when they were in public schools, they weren't allowed to show that.
And here they're encouraged to wear their traditional clothing and to be proud of it.
The clothes I'm wearing, it's called the ribbon shirt.
My grandma made them.
And this is how the old people used to make their clothes.
I'm wearing my ribbon skirt my auntie made.
And I really love pink.
It's not just a funny thing.
It's not just clothing.
It's something important to us.
Be yourself, and don't get embarrassed about wearing your traditional clothes.
