Red Bank teams with PULSSE organization
Members of law enforcement have been under increased scrutiny for how they respond to calls about people undergoing mental health crises. Some New Jersey police departments are partnering with the Proactive Union of Law Enforcement and Social Service Experts, or PULSSE, to help with those challenges that may to be too delicate for police alone. Red Bank is the latest town to partner with PULSSE.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipbreaking news the FBI in Newark has warned of broad threats made against synagogues in New Jersey the specifics of the threats remains unclear but in a tweet the FBI urged people to take all security precautions to protect your community and facility meanwhile police and community members in Newark are still processing the aftermath of a police shooting earlier this week where the community stepped up to help two officers caught in the line of fire and leader helped catch the shooting suspect and turn him into the police it's a major shift from just a few years ago when newark's Police Department was put under a consent decree with a federal Monitor and required to make several reforms to its policing after widespread accusations of Police use of force the police have faced criticism for their handling of this investigation Raven Santana has more on the situation that's caught National media attention and she looks at where police community relations in Newark stand today shots being fired we can see and hear the shots being fired and they're there bending over trying to drag this officer to safety this is the true collaboration and the support that we have from the community that's what we've been trying to mend the past several years the Newark police department says a stronger bond between police and the community saved the lives of two officers and led to the arrest of 30-year-old Kendall Howard after someone tipped them off about his whereabouts Howard who shot and injured two police officers on Tuesday garnered national attention and left many residents on edge for nearly two days officials and Advocates have praised the efforts of civilians who helped those injured officers calling it a testament to anti-violence organizations like the Newark Community street team the way that the community was able to respond was I think done very well it's a testament to the community's growth and development and its uh investment you know uh from the city to it uh specifically with organizations like ourselves I think I was most proud of the fact that no one else was injured outside of the two officers and that you know this young man that uh he was apprehended as opposed to you know further uh injury or anything being done and that the community uh is safer now nationally and locally when you look over the Arc of let's say uh the past 10 years crime has gone down and that's good but crime has not disappeared for folks who live in the neighborhood it is still an everyday occurrence I mean I can't imagine think the most positive aspect of this very tragic episode is that no one was killed uh and and that was very good executive director of Newark Community street team Damon Durden says when tragedy strikes many anti-violence Community organizations tend to respond by promoting unity and a sense of security and that security extends outside of just the crime scene our team was able to actually make sure that the schools that were in the area were safe although they were on lockdown we was able to be a liaison between the parents and the schools the school being on lockdown you still got feelings outside of the school what about their safety you understand I'm saying so we was able to move the families to the far end of the school you know just to direct the kids from walking down chance well let's walk down Goldsmith in Pomona to avoid all of that because it's traumatizing and like a lot of kids like dang at the Costco shop what about us ham says ultimately the only way to end gun violence overall is to hold gun manufacturers accountable and to do more to prevent illegal weapons from entering the city he says if that can be accomplished more tragedies like the one we saw Tuesday can be prevented in the Future Frenzy Spotlight news I'm Raven Santana [Music]
