Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipFederal lawmakers got a chance to grill the CEO of tick tock on Thursday spending roughly five hours hammering the 40 year old head of the social media app with pointed and even combative questions all over the app's ties to its Chinese parent company its effects on children and how it gathers user data Washington is also considering a nationwide ban of the app and how to rein in the power of a social media platform that has more than 150 million U.S users New Jersey Democratic congressman Frank pallone is a ranking member on the house and energy Commerce Committee which held the hearing and joins me now from D.C Congressman pallone yourself and the other members of the committee yesterday were largely concerned with the scope and scale of information collected by Tick Tock did you all walk away any more united in what to do next I think we're United um and and this is what I call Our National Data privacy bill or framework which we actually have from the previous Congress but you know now we think we can move on and that basically says you know prevents Tick-Tock and other social media platforms from Gathering and selling information that they've gathered from you that you're not aware of yeah I mean there is existing legislation that would effectively um fix a lot of the problems or at least find some solutions to a lot of the problems that you all have been discussing uh or discussed yesterday with the CEO um but is there a political will to get that done now I definitely think there is and of course this applies not only to Tick Tock but all the other platforms uh but you know I specifically asked the CEO of tick tock if he would adhere to um some of the things that are in that bill and of course he he didn't say he would but you know one of the things is that you can't Target advertising to anyone under 17 which is of course what Tick Tock does and you know they take your data and then they uh you know sell advertising that's targeted to young people under 17. um and then I also said that you know one of the provisions in our bill is that you uh can't gather or use health information or location data unless the cons the customer has affirmatively said you can uh of course he wouldn't agree to that either uh you know these are the types of things that if done would uh it would cause a lot of of us both Democrat and Republicans to feel better about Tick-Tock and other social media but he wouldn't agree to those things yeah well is there just a broader call to action here because we've spoken about some of the you know concerns surrounding especially for young people social media not just the data collection but misinformation some of the videos that are put out there is this really about a broader call to action it is and you know a lot of the discussion Beyond yesterday with Tick Tock which legitimately was because they are we believe that they're mostly owned by members of the Chinese Communist party you know they're based in Beijing and so that's a separate issue that's particularly for tick tock that needs to be addressed and so some are calling for Tick-Tock to be banned or sold to American investors so you don't have the problem with the Chinese would you back a band like that congressman I I didn't say that yesterday although some of the Republicans did because I do think we have to look into it I mean there are various options here one is that you know they just they force them to sell it to American investors and that they would be based here and their investors would be American and so you wouldn't have the influence of the of the Chinese Communist party so I didn't say I didn't have an advocator for a total ban but it it's there is a lot of support for that just so you know but that's a separate issue from the data privacy issue which is much more broad as you mentioned yeah very quickly before I let you go are you or any of your colleagues there concerned about these talks of a ban or actually outright Banning Tick-Tock escalating tensions with China of course we have to know that Tick Tock itself uh is not based in China but it's parent company bite dance is Chinese owned right but they totally owned it as you know um I I think that we have to As Americans be aware of this uh you know this effort by China to not only uh influence us and and on you know and basically denigrate our democracy but also do the same around the world and you know whether it's uh the military or it's uh Espionage or it's you know the type the type of thing that they uh probably are doing with Tick Tock it's all very dangerous and and I'm not afraid to alert people to it I think it's important that people know that congressman Frank pallone thank you so much for your time sir thank you Brianna take care [Music]
